Refined sugar is popularly known as sucrose. This is the extracted sugar from sugarcane or sugar beets and what comes to the grocery stores as brown or white sugar.
Brown sugar vs white sugar
Brown and white sugar are both refined sugars. This means that the sugar used to make these come from sugarcane, after the juice has evaporated. The reason why their colors are different is because of the different processes involved in manufacturing them.
Once raw sugar is taken from the sugarcane or sugar beets, it will have a brown hue. This is what is known as Turbinado or Demerara sugar. Manufacturers want to remove this brown hue and clean the final product by using chemicals. The result is refined and crystallized white sugar.
Brown sugar is actually white sugar mixed with reintroduced molasses. And there is really nothing in these molasses that can chalk up the claim that brown sugar is healthier than white sugar.
In fact, according to the Dept. of Agriculture of the US, brown sugar has 17 kilocal/tsp, while white sugar only has 16.
Why you should let sugar go
Bottom line is, it doesn’t matter if you consume brown or white sugar. What matters is that you actually consume sugar. The daily recommended intake of added sugar, according to the American Heart Association is 9 tsp or 37.5 g for males and 6 tsp or 25 g for females. And if you need convincing, here are the reasons why you should stop eating sugar in excess.
